Pilbara gets nearly 500k in state budget spendings and $5m to $8m in federal fundings per year. The largest single recipient, New Zealand, receives $2.5m to $5m per year in state and federal money.

However, more than half the money sent to Australia's remote northern towns – including places with a limited understanding of federal policies and what the government can do for them – comes from the federal government itself, including the federal department of employment and economic development ($9m).

"People in remote locations are given a lot of hope that their local government will provide for them and help pay for things like food and medical services," Ms Jones says.

"There's lots of anecdotal evidence for that – even if it's an anecdotal case."

Despite funding from the federal government, one of the country's most remote communities is experiencing "substantial problems" with its water supply, according to a report last year from the WA Government in a letter to a federal minister. "Many communities have no access to well water or water treatment, and that is causing acute water related health issues," the minister wrote.

Mr Palmer said the report was wrong and there was no connection between the remote areas, and the remote communities that are receiving federal funding.

"A common view is that they're not the people who need it the most, rather the remote communities who are in the most need of it, are getting the majority of the funding from the federal government," he said.

Mr Palmer is one of four leaders from his party in the Australian Federal Party's federal division, which represents communities around the country. His leader, Bill Shorten, had similar concerns about the lack of a national conversation about the importance of remote communities.

In a statement, a government spokesman said Mr Palmer was incorrect when he asserted the federal government was "not doing enough in remote areas" because of "the unique circumstances".

"While some communities do need assistance, many have access to modern, reliable water services from a range of water providers in many remote locations," the spokesman said.

"The federal government spends around $60 billion a year supporting economic growth for remote communities, the majority of it under federal policy. "

The spokesman said "local authorities can be successful if they work together" and the regional community health strategy, developed by the department of health, was a "welcome contribution to collaboration".

On average, an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person in Perth gets about $8,500 more than a white person annually. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Regional Health Committee said that did not sound like much money to those living in rural Australia.

Rural areas around Perth receive an average of $5,440 fewe

Is it a sell off or a slowdown?" says Michael Healy, chief economist with Citi.

Some economists think it's a slowdown.

"There's little doubt there is some slack in the labor market," says David Neumark, chief US economist at TD Securities. "With these numbers, it's hard not to see these companies taking a step back. I would say to the company they should be looking at their balance sheets rather than in response to the Fed statement. If they're not, they've not got a lot of time to think about it and have done an awful thing."

That's why the Fed, as Yellen said in her statement, was not taking it as a "sell-off" for long. "There is still lots of slack in the labor market," she wrote. "There has been progress in showing that this slack is moving away from unanticipated recessions. The economy continues to expand at an annualized pace that exceeds expectations."

The pace of growth has been "strong and strong," she added.
